Our approach in action

Warm, consistent, trauma-informed care — with skilled and accountable practice behind it.

Here's how the grown-ups at Phoenix Nest look after children, and keep them safe.

Vision, mission and values

Our vision: every child at Phoenix Nest feels safe, settled and believed in, and leaves us more confident, more hopeful and better prepared for adult life.

Our mission: to provide a small, stable home where children recover from difficult experiences through relationships with adults who stay, alongside the safeguards, structure and support each child needs.

Our values: safety, kindness, consistency, respect, hope and accountability.

The Phoenix Nest care model

Our care is trauma-informed and relationship-based. We believe children heal through safe, consistent relationships. In practice this means:

  • a small, stable staff team, so each child knows the adults who care for them
  • a key worker for every child who gets to know them well and speaks up for them
  • understanding behaviour as communication, and responding with curiosity, calm and clear boundaries rather than blame
  • putting everyday family life — shared meals, routines, celebrations and ordinary fun — at the centre
  • involving children in decisions about their care and the home

Name the practice model the Registered Manager will lead (e.g. PACE) and the training that supports it.

Any restrictive intervention must be necessary, proportionate, the least restrictive option and recorded, and is always reviewed with the child afterwards.

Our quality standards

We work to the nine Quality Standards in the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015. We treat them as a framework for improving children's lives, not a checklist. Our Responsible Individual and Registered Manager monitor quality through supervision, audits, feedback from children and professionals, complaints, and monthly independent visits under Regulation 44, and every finding leads to action.

Quality and purpose of care

A small, warm home offering consistent, relationship-based care built around each child's needs, strengths, identity and placement plan.

Children's views, wishes and feelings

Children are listened to every day, and their views shape their care and the way the home is run. We make sure every child knows how to contact an advocate, their Independent Reviewing Officer, the Children's Commissioner and Ofsted.

Education

Every child should be in full-time education. Before a child arrives, we agree with the placing authority and the Virtual School how their education will continue, so there is no gap. We keep close links with school, attend parents' evenings and reviews, and help with homework and reading. Where a child has an EHCP, we work with school and the local authority to make sure it is followed. If a child is out of school, staff provide a structured day and work urgently to find a place.

Enjoyment and achievement

We help children discover what they enjoy and are good at — sport, music, art, clubs, cooking, the outdoors — and celebrate progress of every kind, not just at school.

Health and wellbeing

Each child is registered with a local GP, dentist and optician, and supported to attend health appointments. We pay close attention to emotional and mental health, and work with CAMHS and other specialists where a child needs extra help.

Positive relationships

Safe, trusting relationships are the foundation of everything we do. Staff are warm, consistent and boundaried. Family time and contact with friends is planned with the placing authority, supported where needed and kept safe.

Protection of children

Safeguarding runs through everything we do: safer recruitment, training, supervision, risk assessment, missing-from-care procedures, online safety and management oversight. We work closely with placing authorities, Bradford Children and Families Trust, West Yorkshire Police, schools and health services.

Staff stay alert, report concerns straight away, share information lawfully and always act in the child's best interests. Our approach covers risks inside and outside the home, including abuse, neglect, bullying, child sexual and criminal exploitation, county lines, online harm, going missing and radicalisation. Each child's safety plan draws on information from partner agencies and our Location Risk Assessment.

Children are helped to understand how to keep themselves safe — healthy relationships, consent, online and road safety, and who to talk to if they're worried.

Leadership and management

Accountable, reflective leadership, using supervision, team meetings, audits and feedback from children, families, professionals and staff to keep improving.

Care planning and moving on

Care is planned and reviewed with the placing authority. Before any admission we assess whether we can safely meet the child's needs and whether the match works for the child already living here. As children grow, we build practical life skills and plan moves on carefully and at the child's pace.

We work closely with placing authorities to make sure every match is right for the child — and for the child already living here.
